Hemorrhoids, a real pain!
By admin | March 5, 2010
If you have ever had hemorrhoids, then you know how uncomfortable they can be at times. When the veins in your anus and anal canal get swollen, this is a hemorrhoid. Sometimes these veins swell further up in the anal canal, which are called internal hemorrhoids, and sometimes the veins swell at the anal opening, which are then called external hemorrhoids. You can even have both internal and external hemorrhoids at the same time. The hemorrhoid treatment depends on what type of hemorrhoid you have.
The symptoms of an internal hemorrhoid are bright streaks of blood on the toilet paper, in the toilet or on the surface of the stool.
External hemorrhoids can bleed and cause a painful lump, which is called a clotted hemorrhoid. External hemorrhoids may also cause mucus with the stool.
Some of the causes of hemorrhoids are straining to have a bowel movement because this causes pressure on the veins. Diarrhea or constipation can cause pressure on the veins also.
Pregnant women often get hemorrhoids because of the increased pressure in the pelvic region Also straining to deliver the baby causing increased pressure, thus hemorrhoids develop.
If you are overweight, this can often lead to hemorrhoids. Also a sedentaty lifestyle sometimes can contribute to hemorrhoids.
The best way to avoid hemorrhoids is to eat a high fiber diet, which includes whole wheats, leafy green vegetables and plenty of fruits. Also, getting regular exercise helps, along with drinking plenty of water. If all else fails, surgery could be another hemorrhoid treatment.
